Medicare Insurance Agency vs. Independent Agencies: Which Is Better for You?

by Joel Wheeler

If you have recently turned 65, you are now eligible for Medicare. There are many perks and benefits to being a part of Medicare, such as cheaper medical services and prescriptions, gym memberships, and even on-call nurses at your disposal. The tricky part for most people, however, is signing up. You as an individual have access to Medicare.com where you can put in a list of your medications, and then compare plans to see which suits your needs best. Though, if you are not the most tech-savvy person that could be difficult. Fortunately, there are insurance agencies that can help you find and compare plans at no cost to you.

You get to choose where you go for help with your Medicare plan search. There are Medicare insurance agencies that can help you compare plans and figure out what you can afford each month. There are also independent insurance agencies. Independent agencies are those with an agent who usually sells a specific brand of insurance. When given the choice, you may feel that the latter could be more personable to work with. However, you may want to check into a Medicare insurance agency before choosing a certain insurance agency. Here are a few reasons why.

Unbiased Opinions

As previously mentioned, independent insurance agencies usually work under a specific brand, such as the big insurance companies in your area. If you go to them for advice on which Medicare plan to pick, they will likely steer you towards the company they work for, though that may not be the best plan for you. A Medicare insurance agency will have information on several different insurance plans, allowing you the freedom to pick without being steered in a certain direction.

Coverage Options

There are many different coverage options available, and depending on your health, you may not need a ton of coverage. A Medicare insurance agent will likely advise you to get the coverage you need while saving you money by not paying for any excess fees.

Supplemental Plans

Some independent insurance agents may not be well versed in additional coverage options such as Supplemental or Medigap Plans. A Medicare specialized agency will probably be able to answer all of your questions and find the right plan for you.

In conclusion, if you are looking for an unbiased opinion on which Medicare plan will meet your needs, go to a Medicare insurance agency. They may be able to show you plans that you had not previously considered, but that will work best for you.
